CALL OFF THE TOURNAMENT

We call upon the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Alfred Ilukena, and the responsible Education Director, Mr. Austin Samupwa to call off a scheduled soccer and netball tournament for Saturday and Sunday, 15 and 16 November 2014 at Kasheshe Comb. School sponsored by the Sibbinda Constituency Councilor, Hon. Ignatius Chunga.

The tournament is intended for school children from grade 5 to 7 of Sibbinda Constituency, who are also scheduled to start writing their final examination on Monday 17 November 2014. We have noticed that learners in these grades and responsible teachers are currently focused on tournament preparations (training) than on exam preparations. We are informed that the councilor sponsored N$30 000.00 for this tournament.

We understand that children have the right to participate in extra mural activities which includes sports activities but we believe that this tournament came at a wrong time and may have a severe negative influence on the performance of concerned learners in the subjects they will write on Monday and thereafter.

It is likely that the tournament is not sponsored in good faith but for personal political interests. It is strange for a political leader who has been in office for four years already to only come out now, during election campaigns, and sponsor a tournament when it is also time for exams. Where was he all along since the beginning of this academic year?

We would also like to urge the student unions, particularly NANSO, to condemn the councilor and this tournament.
